Diabetes is a disease that centers on insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps to regulate how much glucose is in blood.  Diabetes can take a couple of different forms.  In some cases, the pancreas underproduces insulin, or produces no insulin at all (type 1 diabetes).  In others, the body stops responding to the insulin produced (type 2 diabetes).

When either of these things occur, high blood sugar is the result, and what this means is that the glucose used to fuel your cells and provide energy is floating around your blood stream instead of being properly used for fuel.  This, in turn, can lead to a variety of symptoms, such as:

– Increased hunger and/or thirst

– Dry mouth

– Fatigue

– Frequent urination

– Weight loss or gain

– Blurry vision

– Slower than normal healing of cuts or sores

– Neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or pain) in the extremities

– Fainting

– and more

Some of these symptoms can occur with either type of diabetes while others seem to be particular to one type or the other.  However, all can begin to disrupt your life over time, and if diabetes goes untreated, conditions can worsen and even become life threatening.

There is no known cure for diabetes, but there are several treatment options, both for diagnoses of diabetes and pre-diabetes.  These can include insulin therapy (injections), specific diet, exercise, weight loss (in some cases), managing blood pressure and cholesterol, and medication.

Some people also choose to supplement these treatments with pure, pharmaceutical grade CBD oil consumables, topical gels, and other products as a way to treat the discomfort and symptoms of diabetes.  How can high end CBD oil products help diabetics?  Here are a few things to consider.

Inflammation and Pain Relief

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid derived from the Cannabis sativa, or marijuana plant.  One of the best-known health benefits of CBD is its anti-inflammatory properties.  Although diabetes is not specifically linked to internal inflammation, certain factors common to diabetes, including obesity and the accumulation of belly fat, can produce inflammation, and studies have shown that many patients with type 2 diabetes suffer from higher levels of inflammatory chemicals in the body.

When you use products like CBD tinctures, capsules, or vape pens, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system.  One of the effects is that it can influence your immune response, helping to reduce inflammation.  This, in turn, can deliver generalized relief from pain symptoms associated with inflammation.

Topical products like roll on gel can also be helpful for pain relief.  It’s not unusual for patients with type 2 diabetes to suffer from sores and cuts that heal slower than normal.  While it’s always best to discuss treatment options with a doctor, some patients may find that using topical CBD products helps to reduce skin irritation and inflammation, as well as localized pain symptoms.

CBD and Insulin

It’s important to understand that CBD has not been proven to control insulin levels in the body, but studies have shown that CBD has positive correlations with lower levels of insulin, which could be significant for diabetics and pre-diabetics.  A 5-year study entitled “The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin, and Insulin Resistance Among US Adults” published in July 2013 in The American Journal of Medicine measured fasting insulin and glucose levels of  4,657 adult participants, where marijuana use was self-reported.

The study found that participants who reported current marijuana use had, on average, 16% lower fasting insulin levels, as well as “significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences”.  This doesn’t necessarily equate to specific benefits for those with diabetes, but since insulin control and the presence of belly fat are two factors in controlling diabetes, it’s worth noting the correlation.

 CBD and Weight Control

In addition to reducing inflammation and offering pain relief, CBD has been found to have an impact on appetite and the formation of fat cells in the body.  While THC, another cannabinoid found in marijuana, has been linked to appetite stimulation, CBD has been found to have an opposite effect, offering natural appetite suppression.  If weight is a factor contributing to the formation of diabetes, CBD could aid in weight loss efforts.

Further, studies have concluded that CBD could play a role in “fat browning”.  As you may or may not know, white adipose fat stores calories and acts as an energy reserve in the body.  When you’re not getting enough calories from the food you ingest, your body can burn this fat for energy, in essence.

Brown fat is different.  Also known as the “good fat”, brown fat burns calories instead of storing them.  A study published in the May 2016 issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, entitled “Cannabidiol Promotes Browning in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes” found that CBD plays a role in browning fat, or turning white fat into calorie-burning brown fat.  This could have indications for helping the body to more efficiently and effectively burn calories, which could aid in weight loss.
